Exhausts and catalytic converters in Thrapston
We are highly experienced at checking and fitting exhausts! And it’s no surprise, as the exhausts system is one of the most hard working components on your vehicle. It is constantly in use whilst the engine is running. Also on all vehicles registered after 1993 a catalytic converter is fitted.
The exhausts system should be checked for excessive noise, the security of mountings and exhausts gas leaks from silencers and pipes. The exhausts system fitted to a vehicle is subject to corrosion internally and externally.
Exhausts – check for damage
The by-products from combustion i.e. water vapour and corrosive acids can prematurely corrode the steel of the exhaust. Exhausts can also suffer damage from being hit by debris as the car moves. It is therefore important that the exhaust is inspected from the underneath of the car. The safest way to do this is on a vehicle ramp.
Most cars are now subject to exhaust gas emission testing. These tests are carried out with an exhaust gas analyser which is fitted to the to the tailpipe while the car is running.
The emission test is now part of the UK Mot test.
Modern cars are fitted with a catalytic converter at the front of the exhaust system. The test checks the gases to make sure that the engine , fuel system and ignition system are working properly and the exhausts and catalytic converters are working efficiently.
